We've also got a "public" user set up so our users can give out direct URL links to files that are too big to email, like Dropbox and others use, but that lets us maintain complete control of the files.

This way we can just give them a URL link to a webpage that lets them download files and upload new ones instead of our full-page "How to do FTP" document. to upload and download through a webpage interface. We use one called CrushFTP that, in addition to a traditional FTP client/server, will also allow our clients/contractors/etc. We also have had a lot of problems trying to get people outside of the company to figure out how to access an FTP. It's suppose to make a folder connected to the ftp server, so it would sync the folder just like drop box would. Been down that route and has been much better since allowing her to use DropBox. I am not talking big files either that normally will not go through email, just basic Word and PDF files. It amazes that people will distribute files this way, rather than attaching them to their email client and emailing everyone instead. I said why in the world would you store company documents that contain peoples bank info & SS#'s and so forth on a public server that you have no control over and who knows which country the docs are actually in.
